O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high-school student. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her singing ability. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places as well as the bottom two. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
