Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at Wheaton's North High School. She was a part of a couple of commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. Her first assignment was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She made her screen debut with the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Apart from guest-starring in other shows and appearing in independent and TV-produced films, she also appeared as a star of several TV programs. Donna Abandando, her first major role in the ABC detective comedy NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary on ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 until in 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for the Drama Series. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series along with the cast.
